Guidelines to Rise as an Inspirational Speaker

Are you interested in becoming an inspirational speaker, perhaps for students, the youth in general, for corporate groups, or other niche audiences? Then you need to develop your skills not only as a speaker, but as an all-around motivator. Here are some tips on how to make yourself the best inspirational speaker you can be:

1. Improve your speaking skills. The best way to accomplish this is to take public speaking classes. Some local community colleges offer short courses; you can also check out what your local Toastmasters has to offer. By taking classes, you can start to be comfortable addressing large groups.

You can also try recording your speeches. This way, you can watch yourself from the point of view of the audience and see what improvements you can make. Pay close attention to your body language. Improve your eye contact. You also want to criticize the clarity of your speaking voice. Do you sound natural, and more importantly, sincere?

2. Improve your writing. That’s right—writing is a big part of speaking. The most successful motivational speakers are good writers, as they use their own materials in their speaking engagements. To do this, keep a blog, or build a website where you can publish articles whenever possible. Continued writing will improve your speaking and motivational skills.

3. Be comfortable with your equipment and props. What you use is entirely up to you. Some inspirational speakers use large screens and PowerPoint presentations with their speeches. Some even give out workbooks. Choose the tools you are comfortable with and practice with them.

4. Be an expert in a niche. Exactly what do you want to inspire people about? Do you want to help them achieve contentment, career success, a happy personal life, or work fulfillment, for example? Think about your own passions. Think about several topics that you feel strongly about, and then do extensive research on them. You cannot motivate other people without being an expert about your topics.

Stand your ground.  Don't back down.

What does it mean to stand your ground? People today are
constantly making commitments and breaking them.  Look at
divorce rates, credit card debts, New Years's resolutions... and
the list of unfulfilled promises goes on.  It it even possible to
keep our commitments?

Stand your ground,  Don't back down.

Joel Penton says, "Yes it is possible" - he knows from
experience.  Like most of your students, Joel was put into
situations in middle school and high school where it would
have been easy to compromise and break his commitments.
However, he chose to rise above the pressure and keep the
committments he made in school, in football, and in life.

Stand your ground.  Don't back down.

Joe will say that it takes character, it takes will, and the road
will be hard.  But his personal experience is proof that ordinary
people can accomplish great things by simply following through
with the commitments they have made.  Your students will be
inspired and reminded of the importance of not just making
committments, but also keep those commitments.

Don't back down.  Stand your ground.
